Pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes
This was a 2 hour study from life.

I recently had someone ask me why I painted the figure. These weekly sessions with a model are wonderful drawing practice. Using the human figure as a subject presents a variety of challenges -- not only are there differences in the bodies of the models themselves, there are differences in the pose and differences in how the light falls on each one from every angle. In landscape or still life painting, an artist can move objects, trees, and mountains; however, in figure drawing a variance from reality will be readily ascertained, as everyone knows the appearance of the anatomy of a human body. To draw the figure from life is an exercise with far reaching benefits, as the skills derived are applicable to any subject.
